Abstract: Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) create unique cognitive demands for small unit leaders. Years of experience are typically needed to master these demands. However, most platoon leaders tend to have limited experience in Army operations generally, and in MOUT specifically. Developed from in-depth interviews with veterans having MOUT combat experience, this report provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the decisions platoon leaders must make during five stages of building clearing: secure perimeter, approach building, enter building, clear building and maintain security, and evacuate building. The report also discusses five general skills that are required throughout building clearing missions: think like the enemy, maintain situational awareness and the big picture, project into the future, apply rules of engagement, and lead subordinates.
