Abstract: A numerical experiment is described in which an attempt was made to reduce the calculation time for a two-dimensional, Lagrangian, hydrodynamics code, without loss of accuracy. The reduction was accomplished by utilizing a space-dependent time step; i.e., the frequency with which a point is calculated depends on the rate at which changes are occurring in the vicinity of the point. This system permitted savings to be made by eliminating calculations in regions undergoing relatively slow changes.
